People have been kicking balls around for thousands of years. However, it wasn’t until 1863 that official rules and regulations were set in place. Now, players were no longer allowed to use their hands, and a pitch with a goal at either end was introduced. To begin with, soccer balls were made from leather and filled with feathers making them incredibly heavy. Plus, the goals were only around 15 inches, or 40 centimeters, wide. There have also been variations of the game where the ball isn’t allowed to touch the ground. Now, there are 11 players on each team that battle it out to score as many goals as possible while deflecting any shots from the opposing team.
