Kathrine Switzer broke barriers for female marathon runners. In 1967 she became the first woman to officially complete the Boston Marathon, a race that was male only. She signed up for the race using her initials, KV Switzer, and officials didn’t realize it was a woman until a few miles into the race, when they tried to force her out.
She then began working towards making it official that women can race in the marathon. She ran 39 marathons for her career, winning the New York City Marathon in 1974. In 2017, 50 years after her first Boston Marathon, Switzer ran it again.
