Wilma Rudolph struggled with Polio as a child, but that didn’t stop her from becoming an Olympian. In 1956 she won the bronze medal for the 4×100 relay at the Olympics. Four years later, Rudolph made history, winning three gold medals at the 1960 Olympics in Rome, becoming the first American female to win three golds in the same games.
The 1960 games were also the first internationally televised Olympics, which helped Rudolph achieve stardom. She retired just two years later, aged 22, and passed away in 1994, at the age of 54.
