Simone Manuel competed in her first Olympics in 2016 in Rio and won her first gold as part of the women’s 4x100m medley relay. But she made history, and drew the world’s attention, when she tied Australia’s Cate Campbell in the 100m free.
She set a new Olympic record and also becoming the first African-American to win an individual gold medal in swimming at the Olympics. She’s continuing to shine a year later, winning the 50m freestyle at the US national championships.
