The Castle of Mey didn’t start its life as a royal residence. It was built sometime in the 16th century by George Sinclair, who was the Earl of Caithness at the time. It eventually came under the ownership of the Royal Family in the ‘50s when the Queen Mother bought it for herself.

She’d recently lost her husband, and she wanted somewhere she could use for vacations. Since the Queen Mother’s passing, the home receives annual visits from Prince Charles and Camilla, who stay there during the summer.
