Lochte may have been happy to walk away with a gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, but his win wasn’t what everyone was talking about when the Games were over. Instead, it was the controversy he caused after he and three other swimmers made false claims about being robbed while in Brazil. The suggestion that the four of them had been held at gunpoint turned out to be a lie, casting a shadow over South America’s first ever Olympic Games.
As punishment, the swimmer received a 10-month suspension from competing professionally, and that wasn’t the only ban of his career. Lochte is currently serving a 14-month suspension because he’d received an IV infusion in May 2018 that went against USADA guidelines. His chances of competing in the next Olympics grow slimmer by the day.
