People have a tendency to attribute human emotions to things that don’t necessarily have them. The scientific term is called anthropomorphism, and it is the general attribution of human emotion to non-human entities (but not abstract concepts).
This is also due to a specific emotion we call empathy, which is the ability to “feel into” someone else, and identify with them. We empathise with other humans, but also with non-human entities, such as animals. We humans need this empathy feel a connection to others, but do animals?
