Although Diana fell for her engagement ring, it’s believed that it caused quite the stir amongst the rest of the Royal Family. The ring was designed by Garrard, the crown jeweler, who had taken inspiration from the 1840 diamond cluster brooch that had been made for Prince Albert. The brooch later became Victoria’s something blue on her wedding day to the Prince.
Diana spotted the ring and knew that it had to be hers. It wasn’t the design on the cost of the ring that caused such upset among the rest of the family. No, it was the fact that it was featured as a piece available to buy in Garrard’s magazine. This meant that anyone £47,000 (approximately $59,300) to spare could have enjoyed the design for themselves. Apparently, the Royals wanted Diana to choose one that had been custom designed and thought this was a ‘commoner’s’ ring.
