There had been another actor offered the role of Superman before Reeves took it, and that man was Kirk Alyn. The actor had starred in an earlier Superman but had doubts about television as a medium. As far as Alyn was concerned, he thought that TV was not the pinnacle of his artform and believed the real roles belonged on the big screen.
For this reason, Alyn was out, leaving the door open for Reeves. When Reeves was offered Superman, he thought about it for a while but ultimately decided it was a role he could work with and make his own. Little did he know the part would cause him so much pain and anguish.
