Despite their centrality to the story of Michael Oher as it is told, the Tuohys were not the first family to take him in, nor were they the ones to get Oher started at Briarcrest.
Oher was staying with Tony Henderson, a mechanic who was trying to get his son into Briarcrest and suggested Michael attempt to enroll as well. Were it not for Henderson’s suggestion, Oher’s life could have taken an entirely different turn – although he would no doubt have still aimed for the NFL.
