There were so many people on the street that the governor of Georgia declared the film’s premiere date, December 15, a state holiday. The stars of the film were escorted to the event in a parade of limousines, and after the movie they attended a lavish costume ball. President Jimmy Carter declared the event the biggest thing to happen in the south in his life.
