Amid the political tensions of the Cold War, the U.S. and USSR hockey teams faced off in the 1980 Winter Olympics. The latter was considered the clear favorites to bring home the gold, after having won five of the last six gold medals. But it was not to be. With the inexperienced U.S. national team trailing 3-2 heading into the third period, the “miracle” occurred, as they scored twice in the final frame to take down the Soviets with a score of 4-3.
