Boxing is a tough sport to become a legend in as you have to be at your best every time you step in the ring, or you face getting knocked out. These boxers made an everlasting impression on the world of boxing and will be remembered forever for the feats they performed in the ring.
Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Although many people dislike him for his antics, Floyd “Money” Mayweather is one of the best to ever put on a pair of boxing gloves. He retired with a record of 49-0, needing one more to get to 50. He was never going to stay retired as that number was too perfect to ignore, and sure enough in 2017, he faced off against and beat Irish MMA star Conor McGregor in Vegas.
Retiring undefeated is the goal of any boxer but the competition is just too strong, and at some stage there will always be someone who has your number. No one yet has been able to beat Mayweather, and as he has retired yet again, it looks like no one ever will.
Lennox Lewis
Lennox Lewis was a beast of a man who feared no one, no matter their reputation. He was supremely confident in the ring and at 6 ft 5, was never dwarfed by anyone. Although he didn’t retire undefeated, the heavyweight boxer beat every single opponent he faced in the ring. He learned from defeat and always won his rematches. Lewis retired in 2004 as the undisputed king of the heavyweights and deserves to be considered one of the greatest of all time. He defeated some of the best including Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, and Vitali Klitschko.
Rocky Marciano
Floyd Mayweather might have retired undefeated as a lightweight, but Rocky Marciano managed the same feat while fighting in the shark tank that is the heavyweight division. Marciano retired in 1955 with an undefeated record of 49-0, and his record stood over 50 years until Mayweather beat it. Sadly the legendary boxer passed away in a plane crash in 1969, but his mark on the heavyweight division will never be forgotten. His record is the longest unbeaten streak in the heavyweight division and might remain forever.
Muhammad Ali
If you ask someone who knows nothing about boxing to name a boxer, they will probably say Muhammad Ali. Ali was a dynamo in the ring, showcasing agility rarely seen at heavyweight. Never shy in talking trash, Ali had the knockout power to back his words up and left 37 of his opponents lying motionless on the canvas.
While he might have boxed a little longer than he should have, affecting his record, in his prime Ali was untouchable and could pretty much dodge anything. His bouts against Joe Frazier, George Foreman, and Sonny Liston are all iconic matchups and will be remembered forever.
These boxers proved to be pretty much unstoppable in the ring, and if you faced off against them, you knew the odds were stacked in their favor. Their legacies in the boxing ring will live on long after they’ve gone.
