It wasn’t the world’s first hybrid – that distinction belongs to 1901’s Lohner-Porsche – but the Prius is definitely the best selling hybrid in history, with cumulative global sales of upwards of four million units.

That popularity isn’t accidental, as one of the many boxes the Prius checks is the reliability one. Its hybrid engine is as sturdy as anything, but there is one asterisk. Before it ever fails, you’d have replaced the battery pack several times over. Since those are still pretty expensive, the Prius gets in, but with a caveat.
