Thorpe, an Australian Olympic swimmer, is actually allergic to chlorine of all things. He is the most decorated athlete Australia has had. He has won five Olympic gold medals.
Thorpe is also a close friend of Michael Phelps, a fellow Olympic swimmer. Thorpe no longer competes as in 2013 he suffered a shoulder injury that kept him from ever competitively swimming again. He received a Doctor of Letters from Macquarie University for sports philanthropy. In 2013, Thrope made a statement to the press, officially coming out: “I’m comfortable saying I’m a gay man. And I don’t want people to feel the same way I did. You can grow up, you can be comfortable and you can be gay.”
