Sandra Annette Bullock was born in 1964 in Virginia to an American father who worked for the Army and a German mother who was an opera singer and voice teacher. Her upbringing was as far removed from Hollywood as you could imagine.

As her father was a Pentagon contractor, she grew up in Nuremberg, Germany, and Vienna and Salzburg in Austria. Living there for the first 12 years of her life, she grew up speaking German (and still speaks fluently). Taking after her mother, she studied ballet and the vocal arts as a child, but soon found her true calling – acting.
