As it turned out, Ella would get a reply from her mother, at least in a sense. Some kind soul who worked at the post office the day Ella’s card came in noticed it, and apparently it struck a chord.
Most people’s hearts will break when learning such a small child is without her mother. And seeing that card, with the childish handwriting and pictures was too much to bear for this person. They wanted to help ease Ella’s pain in some way, so they wrote a reply and put it in the mail.
