Lasers unearth 60,000 ancient Maya structures in Guatemala

Lidar technology is also known as light detection and ranging, and it proved invaluable during a survey of the Guatemalan landscape. This research aimed to understand more about the people who lived in the Maya civilizations, the politics of the people, the infrastructure that was in place during this time, and their farming practices.

To obtain this information, the team had to ignore the fact that much of what they believe used to be under Maya rule is now covered in dense jungle. Instead, they mapped out 2,100-square-meters of lowland they wanted to explore.
