Lasers unearth 60,000 ancient Maya structures in Guatemala

This impressive amount of land was split across 12 separate areas of jungle and dense forests in Petén. They wanted to map out areas that they knew had once been inhabited by the Maya population, but they also wanted to explore uncharted territory that had yet to be explored.

They hoped that this would allow them to create a bigger picture, and piece together a puzzle that has remained incomplete for many years. Amazingly, this decision worked in their favor, as they uncovered over 60,000 new structures that could be traced back to the Mayans.
