People just don’t like to share the spotlight sometimes. These police officers and firefighters were no different. Deep down, they probably appreciated Rhoda’s hard work, but in that moment, they probably felt like she was trying to do their job.
And if they thought she was trying to do their job, maybe they felt like she was basically telling them that they weren’t doing a good job. Obviously she wasn’t saying that, but this is the way peoples’ minds can work sometimes.
