There is no room for error at the highest level as the sport can chew people up and spit them out. Professional basketball players can finish their careers with hundreds of millions of dollars in the bank, so you’d think working after retiring would be out of the question, right? Not every player ends their career with a fortune, while others simply don’t want to sit around doing nothing for the next 40 years.

Everyone thought the Portland Trail Blazers had got themselves the next big thing in the NBA when they drafted Greg Oden in 2007. He was the first overall pick but was only able to play more than 23 games in a season once. Oden came to the league but was almost immediately hamstrung with a foot injury.
Injuries were a common problem for Oden, but it was mainly his chronic foot problem that caused him to retire. It was a case of what might have been for Oden and the Trail Blazers, but Oden wasn’t feeling sorry for himself. After retiring, Oden went back to college to study while also acting as the student-manager of his school’s basketball team.
