When this teen found out she was the only one to join the cheer squad, she fearlessly stepped up

If Hollywood movies have taught us anything, it’s that cheerleaders are the most popular girls in school. That may be true, but it often gets lonely at the top – literally. Cheerleader Kaitlyn Berthiaume found out just how true this is when she started her senior year of high school, and her fourth year on the cheerleading squad, by discovering there was no one else on the team but her.
If you’re surprised by this fact, you are not alone. After all, don’t all girls want to be a cheerleader in high school? Isn’t it one of the most competitive groups that girls fight over in high school? There was certainly something weird going on here, but Kaitlyn had no time to worry about that. She had to deal with the fact that she was the only cheerleader around, and how to make it work. So as Messalonskee High School’s sole cheerleader, Kaitlyn got down to business, and swept the entire school up in her wake.

Through a strange and almost unbelievable set of circumstances, a high school senior from rural Maine named Kaitlyn Berthiaume ended up becoming the only member of her high school’s cheerleading squad.

She didn’t feel awkward or embarrassed about leading the cheers all by herself. Well… Maybe she was slightly self-conscious occasionally. She didn’t do it for attention – Kaitlyn was in it solely for the love of the sport. And it was so infectious that when crowds see her enthusiasm, it’s impossible not to get caught up in it as well.
