The southern white rhino is a success story, as they were once thought to be extinct in Africa. The same can’t be said for some other subspecies of rhino though, including the northern white and western black, which are extinct in the wild. The black rhino is part of a rapid recovery effort, and the numbers have begun to rise. There are now around 5,000 black rhinos, but those numbers are way down on the 100,000 that existed at the turn of the 20th century.
