As the son of an Italian sea captain, John Owen Dominis often sailed back and forth across the Pacific. He was born in New York 1832 but was raised internationally, settling for a while at a school in Hawaii next door to a Royal school.
Here, John Dominis met and eventually married Royal Lydia Kamakaeha in 1862. Lydia went on to gain the title of Queen Liliuokalani, and in her marriage to John Dominis, they adopted several children until his timely passing in 1891.
