Despite her perseverance, the cancer didn’t make it easy for Doherty to stay strong. She’d hoped to avoid having a mastectomy to treat the illness by going for a lumpectomy instead.
However, the disease had spread further than they’d anticipated, causing multiple tumors to pop up. The emergence of these additional tumors meant that a mastectomy was necessary, so Doherty underwent the procedure in mid-2016. This was followed by several rounds of chemo and radiotherapy to try and rid the actress’ body of the fatal illness.
