Golden retrievers are known for being strong swimming dogs that can withstand cold water. They have a thick undercoat which keeps them insulated against the cold waters. Their outer coats are water repellant which makes it easier for them to swim. It is no surprise then that Storm, a golden retriever, was able to swim out and save the fawn while the border collie was not.

Strong swimmers

Not all dogs are built to swim against strong, cold waters. Golden retrievers generally enjoy swimming as it helps them burn off a lot of their relentless energy. Therefore, Storm’s owner was not surprised when Storm initially ran into the ocean, even though he didn’t see the struggling fawn.
