The very term cheerleader, or “Cheer Leader” as it was used then, also dates back to the late 19th century, and has been in use since as early as 1897.

While Princeton led the field for quite a few years, with special cheering sections dedicated in the university’s stands, the first cheer leader is said to have been University of Minnesota student Johnny Campbell. In 1898, Campbell led the crowd in a cheer that’s still being used by the university’s cheerleaders today, and a tradition was born.
