Kaitlyn’s work ethic, dedication, and – more than everything else – school spirit were not lost on her two coaches.

“It’s unheard of to only have one cheerleader,” Couture told an interviewers. “For her to kind of just stick with it is amazing in itself.” And all three were very serious about this season’s effort, extraordinary though it was, as they weren’t about to leave the high school’s football team the Messalonskee Eagles hanging high and dry.

She was the squad’s captain by unanimous decision, but going out there alone wasn’t all sunshine and lollipops, even taking into account this was Maine. Kaitlyn missed quite a bit about having a team around her.

Her ability to do cheerleaders’ stunts, for instance, has decreased dramatically. “I love stunting,” she said. “You can’t really stunt with one person.” It wasn’t all bad, though. One upside to being alone? There was no one else to compare her to. “If I mess up, no one can know,” she said grinning.
