Normally the players create the unforgettable moments during the World Cup, but in 2006 we turned our attention to the referee. English referee, Graham Poll, gave Croatian defender Josip Šimunić a yellow card during a group match between Croatia and Australia. Following another foul, Šimunić was booked again, and at this stage should have been sent off for two yellow cards. The referee forgot he had previously awarded Šimunić a yellow. Amazingly, instead of being careful, Šimunić fouled again and was awarded a third yellow card, finally being sent off.
