Despite the terror that was running through the cabin, the masks were there to make sure the passengers could get through the experience as safely as possible. Without the oxygen from the masks, the passengers could’ve lost consciousness due to a lack of air. At 30,000 feet the passengers only had a matter of moments before they would begin passing out if they did not put their masks on.
