It turns out that there were strong rip currents that day, and the people in the water were in danger of being swept out deep into the sea, particularly if they didn’t know how to handle the currents. Since it was a popular beach for swimming, there were lifeguards on the beach. However, so many swimmers were out in the water struggling to stay afloat that all of the lifeguards were out there, trying to save everyone who had been pulled out too far.
