What are the ultimate status symbols? Are they big houses? Well, only someone who can get into your gated community can see what that truly looks like. What about wearing tons and tons of jewelry? Sure, though it could all be cubic zirconia, fake gold, or fake silver.
What about if you wear expensive, designer clothes? I don’t know know how to break it to you, but you can get fake Louis Vuitton, Prada, Dolce and Gabbana, and Rolex at any corner store at any one of a number of shops in New York City, or any major city for that matter.
Instead, perhaps the clearest sign of wealth and status is the kind of car that you drive. You can’t fake a Ferrari. You can’t make a copycat Lamborghini. And so, having a really nice car might be the surest way to prove that you have wealth and status, as it is the most difficult marker to fake (save for showing off your bank account and other financial information).
It might surprise you to learn that one of the things that costs a huge premium when buying really nice, really expensive, souped up cars is the thing that you may least expect. No, it is not the amount of gas money you will have to spend (especially since these cars only take premium gas, and most of the time, a LOT of it). It is actually the amount you will need to pay in insurance costs.
In fact, the amount of insurance you will need to pay on a luxury supercar like a McLaren, A Ferrari, or even a Lamborghini may be close to the same amount that you paid for the car itself. As it turns out, insurance on one of these supercars may be up to $20,000 every single year! And if you happen to be lucky enough to afford to buy more than one luxury supercar, then you probably are paying multiple super expensive insurance policies at the same time!
But who is able to make enough money to be able to not only afford to buy one of these supercars, but to be able to pay for all of the maintenance, upkeep, gas, and whatnot? It would need to be someone who makes millions – someone like a sports star.
Ah, the life of professional athlete. They get paid so much money that they literally don’t know at what to throw it all. We wanted to know the crazy cars that these people buy and the crazy things they do with them. Well, as it turns out…
Robinson Cano’s Gold Ferrari
Robinson Cano is a second baseman in the MLB, playing the position for the Seattle Mariners. Originally from the city of San Pedro de Macorís in the impoverished Dominican Republic, it looks like Cano decided that he was going to get the ultimate wealth and status symbol as soon as he could afford it – a golden Ferrari. We aren’t sure whether he has car insurance or gold insurance on his vehicle.
Chad Johnson’s semi-truck
NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson is known for his crazy, over-the-top personality. That is one of the reasons why he decided to buy a tricked out semi-trailer truck cab. Johnson has a giant flat bed attached to the back, in the off-chance that he would be called on to personally deliver a national monument. In any case, we definitely would not want to be anywhere near this monster when it comes barreling down the road!
Joe Johnson’s Ford F650
Athletes usually like to pull crazy stunts out on the field, thereby not only getting more points, but also higher ratings. This could be one of the reasons why so many sports stars get over-the-top cars, and why Utah Jazz’s small forward Joe Johnson decided to get a tricked out Ford F650. Look at the size of that thing! We bet Johnson’s entire team could comfortably fit into it his shimmering metallic avocado green behemoth, and let’s just say these guys don’t skip meals.
Jermain Pennant’s Aston Martin DBS
Jermaine Pennant is the winger for the Billericay Town Football Club in the United Kingdom, though he is probably known more for this Aston Martin DBS than he is actually playing soccer. When people think Aston Martin, they think sleek, smooth, and sophisticated. Pennant, however, took a somewhat different approach, paying to have his Aston Martin to be completely chromed out. The overall effect is so shiny and that the car itself looks more like a 1990s video game animation.
Jim Harrison’s Smart car
When big guys need cars, they usually find something that fits their size. A massive truck, a giant sedan, or even a goo-sized SUV. Well, James Harrison, linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers, went against the grain. This huge beast of a man drives what is possibly the least likely car ever – a tiny little Smart car. However, when asked about why he drives it, he says that not only does it save on gas, but because it has a lot of room. Surprising!
JR Smith’s armored vehicle
J.R. Smith is a shooting guard for the Cleveland Cavaliers and is originally from central New Jersey. He drives perhaps the biggest and scariest car we have ever seen – a fully armored Humvee. Whether zooming around downtown Cleveland or road tripping through Afghanistan, this car would completely impervious and would never have you wondering, “Who shot J.R.?” We guess that’s one way to save on car insurance!
C.J. Wilson’s McLaren F1
C.J. Wilson was a baseball player for the Texas Rangers before going on to play for his hometown team, the Los Angeles Angels. He also has a knack for cars, and he went out and bought himself one of the fastest cars on the planet – the McLaren F1. For most people who buy that car, it is solely a show piece – in part its upkeep is so expensive. However, we are sure that Wilson’s salary from all of those ball games easily covers the costs.
Lewis Hamilton’s Pagani Zonda
Lewis Hamilton is perhaps the most famous Formula One race car driver in the world. He is among the top drivers to have racked up the highest number of wins in the sport ever, and is easily one of the best drivers in the world. However, he is still something of a speed addict, something which clearly shows in his choice of vehicle – the Pagani Zonda. We didn’t know what it was either, but it sure is beautiful.
Devin Hester’s Louis Vuitton
Devin Hester has one of our favorite cars. It is as cool looking as the colors on it are loud. With Louis Vuitton rims (are they spinners??) and with the Louis Vuitton paint scheme all around the car, this wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks is sure to turn heads anywhere he goes. We wonder if he bought this car with the winnings he received after winning the Super Bowl XLI against the Indianapolis Colts.
Bubba Watson’s General Lee
Bubba Watson is a world renowned golfer. In fact, he was at one point the number three golfer in the entire world. However, he is perhaps even more well known for the car he recently picked up at an auction. That’s right, he has one of the original Dukes of Hazzard General Lee cars. He has drawn some heat for the car due to it having a Confederate flag on the roof, but he has promised to paint it over.
Roy Halladay’s hot rod
Roy “Doc” Halladay was a Major League Baseball star who used to play for the Philadelphia Phillies and was known as much for his cars as he was for being able to pitch a perfect game (which he did against the Florida Marlins). Sadly, he passed away after the prototype, amphibious aircraft he was flying crashed into the Gulf of Mexico. But we will always remember him cruising around in his stylish hotrod.
Darren McFadden’s Barney-mobile
One of the first things that a lot of athletes (and, let’s be real, normal people) do the second that they get a huge windfall of cash is spend it, especially on something cool like an awesome looking car. That is exactly what football star Darren McFadden did when he was first drafted to the Oakland Raiders. Instead of springing for a Ferrari or Mercedes, though, he decided he would design his own car. Darren calls his flashy ride a “cop attracter,” though we would imagine anyone would be distracted by its Barney-themed color scheme.
LeBron James’s Chevrolet Camaro SS
LeBron James is one of the best basketball players of this generation. He has been playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers as well as the Miami Heat (but he’s now back in Cleveland). He was probably really excited to play for them, as he grew up in nearby Akron, OH. And when he rolls around his old hood he’s super noticeable, as he whips around town in an all white Chevy Camaro SS.
Tom Brady: Audi R8
Despite it being Tom Brady, we must admit that the star New England Patriots quarterback does in fact have really good taste in cars. We specifically like the fact that he has recently bought an Audi R8 coupe, and in red no less. And you know what they say – red cars pay higher insurance rates. But with Tom Brady and his millions coming in from sponsorship deals as well as the Patriots themselves, we are sure he is not that concerned with such trifles.
John Cena’s supercar
What is this… thing? Is it a car? Does it fly? Does it even take gas? Well, for one thing, we absolutely do know that this is Jon Cena’s car (and we would argue his favorite). This hotwheels looking machine as specifically designed for John Cena. You’ll never guess what it’s name is either – the InCENArator. Is this car even street legal? A better question yet is – is this car even ensurable?
Shaq’s Custom ‘Superman’ Escalade
Shaq is an absolute giant. And for all of the young’uns who do not know who Shaq is, he is one of the best basketball players to ever play the sport. But standing at over seven feet tall and weighing over three hundred pounds means that he needs to have a big ole car in order to get around. And that is why he turned his escalade into the ultimate Shaq mobile – complete with a superman emblem. Hope you’re insured for a Shaq attack!
Alfred Morris’s 1991 Mazda 626
Alfred Morris was originally drafted to the Washington Redskins back in 2012, but has since been traded to the Dallas Cowboys, where he plays as a running back. While the vast majority of his teammates have flashy rides, Morris’ is decidedly not. In fact, it seems as if his car is the car that he bought when he turned 16 – a 1991 Mazda. We guess that when it comes to getting around, Morris is less about flash and more about reliability. Sounds like marriage material!
Michael Jordan’s Mercedes SLR McLaren 722
Michael Jordan is objectively the greatest basketball player who has ever lived. He has more NBA Championship rings than anyone else, and he was in what was perhaps the greatest basketball movie of all time – Space Jam. With his sponsorship deals on nearly everything related to sports, Jordan definitely deserves the Mercedes SLR McLaren 722 he bought for himself. And if he ever wants to take us for a spin in it, well, our life insurance is certainly up to date!
Alex Ovetchkin – Matte Black Mercedes-Benz SL65
Alex Ovechkin is a Moscow, Russia born international hockey sensation. He has been playing the position of left wing on the Washington Capitols for approximately a decade and a half, and he seems to be showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Ovechkin used the dollars he gained and instead of converting them into Rubles, he bought a sleek, Matte Black Mercedes-Benz SL65. We wonder if he take President Putin for rides when Putin is visiting friends in DC.
Hulk Hogan – Customized Dodge Viper
Hulk Hogan is one of the best, most iconic wrestlers of all time. And with all of that, including the branding and toy deals, it certainly seems that he was able to accrue quite a high amount of cash. With all the Hulk mania that existed, on top of the reality show which he was on, he is definitely not hurting for cash. Therefore, he decided to get a hulk custom designed Dodge Viper, which we are positive is insured for a whole lot.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s Lamborghini Aventador
Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the hottest soccer players on the planet right now. There is no one in Europe, Africa, South America or even Asia who does not want to be him. He is a hero to those in the developing world. And with that hero status comes not only the girls but the cars as well. That is why he has been able to get his hands on a Lamborghini Aventador with such ease. They aren’t nearly as easy to insure as they are to buy though!
David Beckham’s Custom 2010 Chevy Camaro
Although David Beckham’s soccer stardom really faded over the course of the last decade, this does not seem to matter all that much to him. After all, he is still regarded as one of the best to ever play, and he played for top teams all over the world. In fact, his net worth is estimated to be just shy one one billion dollars! And yet, he still stays humble and continues to drive his custom built 2010 Chevy Camaro.
Mario Balotelli Ferrari 458 Spider
Mario Balotelli is an Italian born soccer phenomenon who has played for Liverpool as well as Milan, and currently plays for Nice in France. He has represented Italy in the FIFA World Cup, UEFA European Championships, and many other competitions. With someone so talented, it is no wonder that he is worth close to $50 million. And that is more than likely what led him to the decision to buy a Ferrari 458 Spider.
Lionel Messi’s Prius
In the developing world (or even in the world of soccer in general), you’re either a Ronaldo fan or a Lionel Messi fan. The Argentinian born Messi has taken the soccer world by storm, and he is easily one of the most recognizable figures in the sport and is worth over $100 million today. So what kind of car does Messi drive? Well, it’s not a Ferrari, a Lamborghini, or even a Mercedes. Messi instead drives a Prius! The man is a legend on the field and in terms of environmental protection.
Reggie Bush’s Shelby Mustang
Reggie Bush should be known for his football playing prowess. After all, he has played for everyone from the New Orleans Saints to the Detroit Lions and even the San Francisco 49ers. But no, he will perhaps forever be remembered as the guy who used to date reality television star-turned empire mogul Kim Kardashian. After breaking up with Kim, he went out and got himself a Shelby Mustang. But he’s back on the up and up, married to Armenian dancer Lilit Avagyan. Safe driving you two!
Floyd Mayweather’s Rolls Royce Phantom Limo
Former professional boxer Floyd Mayweather is perhaps the most car-obsessed person in the world (or at least in the United States). He has a whole fleet of vehicles, every single one of which are painted white. But perhaps his most grandiose vehicle is his Rolls Royce Phantom Limo. Well, we guess that when you are as wealthy as Mayweather is, making sure your entire entourage rides around in ghost-white parade of deluxe vehicles is just your average Monday!
Antonio Garay’s Hello Kitty Smart
Former NFL nose tackle Antonio Garay is one of the more eccentric players to play in the NFL. He was really well known for his crazy hairstyles, carving and coloring all manner of symbols into his hair. He was basically a walking billboard! Off the field, however, he was known for one thing and one thing only – his Hello Kitty Smart Car! With such a big dude in such a small car, we hope his insurance premiums are tiny.
