Invictus is based on true events, when Nelson Mandela first became president after he was imprisoned for 27 years, and looks to use sports, specifically Rugby, to unite the nation. In the movie, Mandela, played by Morgan Freeman, gave the South African captain Francois Pienaar a copy of William Henley’s poem Invictus, which helped sustain him while he was in prison. The poem did in fact help Mandela while he was on Robben Island, but Mandela never gave it to Pienaar. Rather, he gave him a copy of Theodore Roosevelt’s speech The Man in the Arena.
