These drains are designed this way to that any cars or vehicles that drive over them aren’t damaged, but rainwater easily flows into them. The water won’t have a problem getting into this drain, but neither will anything else.

There is no way anything passing over that thin wire grid isn’t getting sucked into the sewers below. If anyone in that neighborhood has lost a cat recently, they should probably check down that drain before gathering a search party.
