For a time, Washington Capitals winger and Stanley Cup winner Alex Ovechkin and tennis player Maria Kirilenko were the hottest thing in Russian sports. The former first overall pick and two-time world champion met Kirilenko in 2011, when he was doing an NHL press junket and she was practicing for the U.S. Open.
Two years later, they got engaged in Russia on New Year’s Eve. They eventually broke up – possibly over Ovechkin’s extracurricular activities – but it sure was fun while it lasted. Kirilenko was left with her $8 million, while Ovechkin had his $60 million to comfort him.
