Let’s face it, as fans we love to see our favorite athletes or teams go on streaks, and some streaks that we’ve seen throughout the history of sports are quite impressive. The University of Connecticut women’s team broke its own record of consecutive wins and won more than 110 games in a row, captivating the entire sports world. The San Antonio Spurs have made the playoffs every year for two decades and counting. Glenn Hall played over 500 consecutive games as goalie. These are just three examples of great feats done by our favorite teams and players.
What they are capable of doing is just downright impressive.
But let’s be honest, just because these streaks are impressive, doesn’t mean they’re necessarily good. Over the years we’ve seen some streaks that we’d like to forget, but probably never will. The Cubs going 108 years without a World Series win will be one of the greatest stories in the history of Major League Baseball, so will Bill Bergen’s 46 straight at-bats without a hit. Who can forget the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 26 straight losses when the franchise was first created?
Streaks in sports are a good thing. Both the good streaks and the bad. They give us something to hope for, to enjoy and to be proud of (at least the good ones give us something to be proud of). We bask in our team’s greatness. In Oklahoma’s 47 straight wins, the Celtics dominance of the 1950s and 1960s that resulted in eight consecutive championships and 11 rings in 13 years.
Some of the streaks on this list are fresh, some will never be broken. One thing is for sure, you won’t forget these athletes, the teams and their accomplishments over the years.
Here they are, the most impressive streaks in the history of sports:
[post_page_title]Wayne Gretzky’s scoring streak[/post_page_title]
Wayne Gretzky, the GOAT, has several streaks we can add to this list, but we decided to focus on his consecutive scoring streak. During the 1983-84 season, Gretzky scored at least a single point in 51 straight games. His streak came to an end on January 28, 1984, when the LA Kings managed to keep him off the scoresheet. The Kings goalie allowed two goals in the third period, but Gretzky wasn’t involved in either. The Oilers ended up losing the game.
