Brett would eventually leave for college, choosing to attend the University of Southern Mississippi and getting selected to play on the football team there. Brett was the backup quarterback and was sent in his freshman year in order to help out his team leading the team to victory 31-24. However, he was soon after in a car accident which necessitated the removal of nearly 30 inches of intestines. This accident nearly de-railed his career, but he toughed it out and continued to play.
