David Johnson was a volcanologist, who was studying Mount St. Helens, which erupted in Washington in 1980. The 31-year-old was the first one to report the volcano was erupting (possibly saving many lives).
But despite the fact that he was 6 miles away from the volcano, he was hit by a lateral blast emerging from the side of the volcano – so he passed away shortly after giving the heads-up. The eruption claimed the lives of approximately 57 people, and caused about $1 billion worth of damage.
