The newer generation probably never even heard of Mount Saint Helens, but it was the center of the most economically destructive – and, tragically, the deadliest – volcanic event in the history of the United States.
Its massive eruption on May 18, 1980, ended the lives of 57 people and left a path of destruction – even on the volcano itself. An avalanche that was caused by a 5.1 earthquake reduced the elevation of the mountain’s summit from 9,677 to 8,363 feet.
