Dr Curtis Willard, the first husband of Mary-Ellen, originally showed up as the new doctor in town, and made a distinctly poor impression. Willard was brusque and somewhat superior, asserting his opinion against all disagreement, and speaking to the townspeople dismissively.
However, with the help of Mary-Ellen, he learned how to be more approachable and sympathetic, and eventually became much kinder to people. Curtis and Mary-Ellen would end up marrying each other, although the relationship did not last.
