While today NFL cheerleaders may be said to all fit a certain look or type, at the genesis of modern pro football cheerleading – the 1972 Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders – things were quite different. First came ditching the traditional skirt in favor of hot pants, which are still used today.

Then, came handpicking cheerleaders to fit a variety of male fancies, from the long-haired blonde to the girl with pigtails, and the sultry redhead. This allowed the guys in the stadium to hone in on their preferred type, and yell down at them to shake their stuff.
