Althea Gibson broke the tennis color barrier. Some have even called her the Jackie Robinson of tennis. In 1956 she became the first black tennis player to win the French championship. A year later she won Wimbledon and the US Open. But it took years for her to be able to win such championships. In 1950 tennis was still segregated, and the American Tennis Association had to persuade the US Lawn Tennis Association to allow her to play in Forest Hills. She would go on to win 11 titles in eight years.
