Meg Ryan's journey through Hollywood

Aware that her biggest successes were in one particular genre, Ryan made sure not to stray too far from rom-coms. She appeared in “I.Q.” the same year, followed by “French Kiss” a few months later.

Neither film dazzled viewers and critics, although the actress was praised for being so skilled in her craft. Thankfully, 1998’s “You’ve Got Mail” fared much better, amassing over $250 million at the box office and pulling in more positive reviews. Clearly, the pairing of Ryan and Tom Hanks was a winning one.

Meg’s feature in “You’ve Got Mail” was notable because it marked the third rom-com that she’d received a Golden Globe nomination for. “When Harry Met Sally…” and “Sleepless in Seattle” also earned Ryan an opportunity to walk away with the prestigious award, although she never did.

She was bested by Jessica Tandy, Angela Bassett and Gwyneth Paltrow in 1990, 1994 and 1999 respectively. Things went a similar way in many of the other award nominations that Ryan received during the ‘90s, of which there were quite a few.
