Against the LA Rams on November 17, 1991, first right guard Mike Utley suffered a career-ending injury to his spine, which rendered him paralyzed. Unaware that he had essentially become a quadriplegic, he managed to give the crowd a thumbs up as he was taken off the field in a gurney. This later became the symbol of his foundation, which seeks to find a cure for spinal injury. Thankfully, since then, Mike has managed to retain the use of his arms.
