It’s been argued by some people online that the tip system should be removed completely. Instead, waitstaff ought to receive a basic payment that’s large enough to cover their various expenses. That way, servers can focus less on whether they’ll be able to afford their rent and bills every month, and more on doing a good job.
It would undoubtedly fix some of the instability in their lives, although there would be potential side effects. What if waitstaff didn’t bother making their customers happy because they didn’t need their tips anymore?
