A smart strategy to not let things get out of hand, and for example get into some trouble with HR, is to make sure the humor is understood by everyone. Many hearing about Francis and his sandwich battle with an innocent colleague, might think the whole thing was funny. But clearly, the owner of the rye sandwich did not feel that way.
Had Francis perhaps made sure to get to know this colleague better, he would have realized his sense of humor was not appreciated.
