From 1955 to 1971 Bunning pitched for several MLB teams including the Detroit Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates. At the time of his retirement, Bunning had the second most strikeouts in MLB at 2,855. In 1964 he pitched the perfect game against the New York Mets.
