In 2012, Gabby Douglas, nicknamed the Flying Squirrel, paved the way for hopefully thousands of African American girls who will compete in gymnastics. While competing at the Olympic Summer games in London, Douglas became the first African American woman to win the gold medal for the individual all-around, essentially paving the way for Simone Biles four years later. Overall, Douglas, who is just 21 years old, has competed in two Olympics, winning three gold medals, in the team competition (2012, 2016) and the all-around that made history.
