After retiring at the age of 41, Maldini decided he would try his hand at professional tennis since declaring he had no interest in moving into coaching. He qualified for a tournament in Milan in 2017 with his doubles partner, but they lost their first match 6-1, 6-1. Maldini declared after the match that he wouldn’t play another tennis match as a professional. Milan retired Maldini’s squad jersey, number 3, unless some of his sons later play for the team, in which case his shirt would be bequeathed to them.
