Gascoigne retired from playing in 2004 after struggling to play for any major clubs at the end of his career. He was possibly most famous for crying during the 1990 World Cup semi-final after receiving a booking that would make him miss the final if England got there. He had a drinking problem and had to check himself into rehab several times, both during his career and after. The latest time Gascoigne checked into rehab was as recent as 2017, for an addiction to the child’s medicine Calpol, which the troubled soccer star claimed would be the last. Gascoigne was sectioned in 2008 after an incident where he tried to harm himself.
